Course info
Sociology is the lively but critical study of society. You will learn how to make sense of the way the world is changing, such as the effects of new technology on everyday life and study a broad range of subjects that take in local, national and global social relationships. As a result, you will receive a thorough grounding in both social theory and research methods that are anchored in a rich diversity of social issues. Three compulsory modules in year one provide you with a firm foundation for future study. Social Theory embraces the classic work of Marx, Weber and Durkheim and a range of 20th century social theorists. Contemporary Society and Social Change looks at issues such as the family, social class, gender, 'race', etc. Studying Society explores research methods, including an introduction to IT work, to ensure you are fully conversant with word processing, e-mail and the internet. You also have the option of studying Voluntary Service Learning, and the History of Social Policy and Political Issues in Social Policy. Year two brings compulsory modules in History and the Philosophy of Social Science and Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods and a broad array of options, including Crime and Deviance, Gender and Law, and Children, Youth and Society. In year three, you will undertake an extended piece of self-directed study. You can either write a dissertation on a subject of your choice or you can take the Applied Social Research module and carry out a piece of research commissioned by a local agency.
