Popular music is central to the lives of millions of people across the globe. Yet what is it and how has it gained such cultural significance? This programme, taught by staff in The Institute of Popular Music (IPM) aims to provide an in-depth understanding of popular music in culture and society, and to offer students opportunities for specialisation in one of three broad areas: 'musical production and creativity', 'music, business and media', and 'music and daily life'. The programme covers a broad variety of popular music styles, from pop to traditional folk music. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of popular music and examines it from a variety of aspects, including the creative/technological, commercial and social-historical. For example, in year two modules in Music and Local Identity, Mediating Music and Song writing are offered. During their second and third years students are provided with an opportunity to develop a specialist interest in one or more of these aspects.
