Course info
This degree programme offers a course of study in Physics with particular emphasis in year three on applied topics. The Faculty of Engineering provides a module on the management of research and development. This covers the process of technological innovation, new product innovation and managing the translation of innovation into manufacture. There are also extensive opportunities to work on projects of direct relevance to industry. The programme is intended for students who are less interested in mathematical aspects of Physics. Transfer is possible between this programme and other Physics programmes after completion of year one or year two of study. The skills developed (numeracy, reasoning, problem solving, practical techniques, computing, written and oral communication) equip graduates for careers in a wide variety of technologically oriented fields. 1st and 2nd years: Are the same as for the Physics BSc course F300. An extra module Theoretical Techniques in Physics is available in year one to provide additional support in Mathematics. 3rd year: Comprises the following modules: Electronic Instrumentation; Materials and Semiconductor Physics; Nuclear Energy and Environmental Radiation; Industrial Studies; two-unit project running through both semesters. The project involves computer interfacing to a system which is planned, designed and built by the students. In addition, two units are chosen from Gravitation and Cosmology for Physicists; Stellar Astrophysics; Surface Physics; Advanced Electromagnetism.
