In addition to the philosophical skills you will learn, the French component of this degree aims to give students a thorough knowledge of the language, literature and culture of French-speaking countries. You will be able to develop both your language skills and your processes of critical, analytical thought through the Philosophy modules, ensuring you have a thorough grounding in the history of ideas. Right from the start, this degree is intended to immerse you in the subject. It covers the language, literature, history, politics and culture of modern France with modules such as Immigration, French Cinema, the Medieval World, Ancien Regime Theatre and Novel, Travel Literature, Structuralism and Negritude and Francophone Identities. On the Philosophy side, you will choose from a wide range of topics including Greek Philosophical Thought, Political Philosophy, Darwin, Marx and Freud and Critical Thinking. In year three, you can choose from working as an assistant in a French school, or studying at university in Paris, Dijon, Lyon or Aix-en-Provence. Here, you will complete a dissertation project in French on a topic of your choice.
