Course info
Pathology is active in a number of fields of research with a particular emphasis upon the mechanisms involved in the growth of cancer cells and the early diagnosis of cancer. Pathology is a large and expanding discipline which provides the service in diagnostic pathology to the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust as well as offering services in specialised fields of pathology to several other hospitals in the North West. Most members of the academic staff are medically qualified and hold honorary appointments in the National Health Service. Consequently, the main research interests have a strong clinical orientation. Nevertheless, there is a flourishing molecular biology laboratory staffed by postdoctoral and PhD science graduates. Research facilities are available for steriology, immunohistochemistry, radioimmunoassay, in situ hybridisation, tissue culture, flow cytometry and molecular biology. The Cancer Tissue Bank Research Centre is located within Pathology. This research facility, which is funded by a generous donation from the Candis magazine, acquires, stores, documents and characterises malignant tissue.
