Course info
This programme is designed to help you develop your research and analytical skills by broadening out the subject. Focusing closely on society, economy and culture, this programme is an exciting and eclectic mix of ideas and techniques developed by geographers, sociologists and economists as well as historians. With a broad foundation in the first year followed by a wide range of choice in the following years, you will be able virtually to construct your own programme of study. You will take 8 modules in year 1, of which only 2 are compulsory: Computing and Statistics for Historians, and the Economy and the State. For breadth, 2 first year modules are taken from other departments such as Archaeology, French, Irish Studies, Music or Politics. Your second year modules are taken mainly from the Social and Economic modules available in the general History syllabus. Among other modules, popular Social and Economic History options include, in year 1, the Industrial Revolution, British Social History 1900 -1950 and the History of Medicine. In the second year, students can study Social Theory for Social Historians, and a range of social and economic history topics in British, Irish, European, American and Latin American History. In the final year, popular advanced courses include issues covered in British, Russian, African, German and American modules, together with some Gender History topics. Much of your final year will be spent on your dissertation - a great opportunity for you to do some real historical research.
