This degree lets you reach a high level of proficiency in German and Spanish, as well as gain an understanding of Hispanic and German cultures. A beginners' programme is available if you have not studied Spanish or German to A level standard, but you must be qualified to A level in at least one of the two languages. The programme includes a year abroad. You will take modules in German and Spanish language, with a choice of options covering all aspects of literature, history, culture, politics and art. For German, these may include topics such as: Nazi Germany, Contemporary Literature, Brecht, Kafka, German-Jewish studies, Women's Politics, Freud, Gypsies in German Literature, German Cinema and a number of courses on Post-Unification Germany, among others. Hispanic options include: twentieth century Spain, Latin American Society and Culture, the Golden Age of Spain, Spanish Literature, Mexican Fiction, Portuguese literature, Spanish Cinema, Introductory Portuguese and Introductory Catalan, Spanish Linguistics, among others. The third year is spent in a German- or Spanish-speaking country, or divided between the two. We strongly recommend that those new to German spend at least half the year in a German-speaking country.
