Course info
French is a major world language. Apart from the 55 million people in France, there are native speakers in North America, South America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and on the Pacific Rim. French remains a major international language of business, diplomacy, and culture. With this degree, you will reach a high level of proficiency in both written and spoken French. You will also gain a thorough knowledge of the literature, culture, history and institutions of France. In the final year, a Distinction in Oral Proficiency is awarded to students who show outstanding oral ability. The programme includes a year abroad. You will take language modules as well as modules from a selection of literary, social and linguistic topics. There is a wide array of optional modules in subjects such as Immigration, French Cinema, the Medieval World, Ancien Regime Theatre and Novel, Travel Literature, Structuralism and Negritude and Francophone Identities, as well as modules in Vocabulary and Advanced Translation. Additional subjects may be taken from departments in the Faculties of Arts and Social and Environmental Studies. In addition, you will spend one year in a French-speaking country usually at universities (Paris, Dijon, Lyon or Aix-en-Provence) under the SOCRATES scheme; or at other universities; or as an assistant in a school. During this year, you will complete a dissertation in French on a topic of your choice, or take examinations at your SOCRATES University.
