Course info
If you are looking to reach a high level of proficiency in both French and German, this degree will suit you. Through a wide range of literary, linguistic, cultural and historical options, you will gain an in-depth knowledge of France and the German-speaking world, their pasts, presents and possible futures. A beginners' programme is available if you have not studied German to A level standard. You will take French and German language modules, with beginners in German taking extra modules. In addition, you will choose modules from a selection such as Nazi Germany, Contemporary Literature, Brecht, Kafka, German-Jewish studies, Women's Politics, Freud, Gypsies in German literature, German Cinema and a number of courses on Post-Unification Germany, among others. French options include Immigration, French Cinema, the Medieval World, Ancien Regime Theatre and Novel, Travel Literature, Structuralism and Negritude, Francophone Identities, among others. You will spend one year in either a French- or German-speaking country. Under the SOCRATES programme, you may spend the whole of the year at a university in France, Germany or Austria. You can also divide your time between two countries.
