Course info
Your third year will be spent abroad as an assistant in a school, as a student at university or on a SOCRATES programme. Various assessment methods are used which ensure the development of both high-level specific skills and breadth. In particular, we emphasise the ability to read closely, cope with very different kinds of texts and write with fluency. The degree syllabus is unusually wide and offers a very broad historical scope. Students receive a balanced general education in English and French but can choose to emphasise linguistic, literary or socio-cultural aspects. The year abroad develops language expertise and gives first-hand knowledge of French life. Teaching is complemented by strong traditions of theatre production in both subjects, reading weekends, a reading room with current French journals, etc. In the first year, in addition to the core modules in English Language and Literature, students take two modules of French Language covering speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. In years two and four, the range widens, including modules such as French Cinema, Travel Literature and Francophone Identities. In English, the topics offered include the traditional 'core' subjects such as the major literary periods, canonical authors, history of the language, and grammar, as well as a range of innovative areas - from the analysis of informal conversation to an exploration of language and gender; from medieval romances to crime fiction and science fiction; from creative writing to drama workshops. You spend your third year in a French-speaking country. You will either be enrolled as a student at a university, in which case your work there will form part of your final assessment, or you may choose to work as an assistant in a school, in which case you will be required to write an extended essay in French.
