Course info
The group, which involves the Clinical Research Unit in the Clinical Sciences Centre, University Hospital Aintree interacts with the Neuroendocrinology and Obesity Biology Unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital (directed by Professor Trayhurn). The research of the group encompasses a wide range from basic science through to clinical research. Major research interests are obesity, adipose tissue biology, neuroendocrinology of feeding and energy balance, and clinical diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism. Research themes include fundamental molecular mechanisms in the regulation of energy homeostasis, including peripheral adiposity signals and their interactions with the brain, and the nutritional genomics of adipose tissue, focusing on the secretory and endocrine role of adipose tissue ('adipokines'). Fundamental mechanisms of the regulation of energy homeostasis. Peripheral signals of adiposity to the brain. The endocrine and secretory role of adipose tissue the adipokines. Nutritional genomics. Dr John Wilding (Reader) also studies aspects of the regulation of energy balance and endocrine function by hypothalamic neuropeptides in obesity, diabetes and cancer cachexia, and the interaction of leptin, insulin and other signals within the brain. Clinical research is led by Dr John Wilding and Dr Geoff Gill (Reader), with themes including visceral adipose tissue biology and central obesity, the sympathetic nervous system and vasculature in obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and its complications and human hypothalamic obesity. Dr Gill has a major research interest in clinical diabetes in developing countries. The Division is also a major centre for clinical trials in diabetes and obesity.
