Course info
Much of what we understand about the organisation of biological processes can in turn be applied to produce new approaches to solving problems in computer science such as neural and evolutionary computing. The virtuous circle is complete when these new techniques are themselves applied to biological problems. The Department of Computer Science has outstanding research groups in agent systems, complexity, theory and algorithmics, and logic and computation. Research interests include computational biology, biologically motivated computing, modelling of microbial populations, and modelling related to cardiology. It also has excellent computing facilities. Programme structure: Semester 1 Modules are selected from the following to complement the background of the student Software development* Biocomputation; Bioinformatics; Databases and information systems; WWW programming; Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Biology; Techniques in Cell Biology. Semester 2: Biosystems; Applied Algorithmics; Data mining; Case studies on Advanced Topics in Bioinformatics; Communication Skills for Bioinformatics; Dissertation.

How much will it cost?
Course fees are subject to change and you are advised to check the current details with the course provider before enrolling on this course.

Entry Requirements
We expect UK students to have a minimum of a 2:ii degree either in biological sciences (including modules in genetics and/or biochemistry), computer science or, by prior consultation, an alternative degree in physical or mathematical sciences. They should also have a good standard of computer literacy, e.g. familiarity with standard office applications and use of web browsers, although no formal qualification is required. Prior programming experience is not required. International students will be assessed on a similar basis taking into account the course duration, level and grade of their qualifications, the breadth and depth of component modules and information provided by NARIC and IRRO.
