Course info
This is a one-year full-time programme, primarily aimed at individuals who are currently working, or intending to work with substance misusers, in a professional capacity. The overall aim of this programme is to provide students with knowledge of the psychological, physiological, and social aspects of substance use, misuse, and dependence, and to link this theoretical knowledge with current interventions aimed at substance misusers. To achieve this aim the programme teaching is designed to present an integrative, multidisciplinary perspective on the field of addictive behaviours, from psychopharmacology through to social policy. Different modules of the programme will be taught by staff from the School of Psychology, the School of Sociology and Social Policy and Clinical Psychologists working in the field (who will be teaching an applied component in their practices). As the field of addictive behaviours is constantly changing, the emphasis will be on students learning the skills necessary to acquire and integrate new information into their existing knowledge and professional practice. Students are required to complete four taught modules and one research dissertation module (the latter contributing one third of the total). Early exit points are available for Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate for those unable to continue to MSc.
