Course info
This degree aims to produce multi-skilled practitioners, capable of working in classical theatre or television one moment and in commercial West End musical theatre the next, not only possessing the business and managerial skills to generate their own employment but also the intellectual clarity and rigor to develop their own work if the opportunity arises. In the first year students work towards freeing and discovering their expressive capabilities. Acting classes cover improvisation, scene study, textual analysis and practical play study and presentation. Voice, speech and movement occupy half the class hours and students approach text through heightened verse, song and non-verbal performance. There are two production projects. Students choose an elective module and take classes in Professional Development and Contextual Studies, to provide a theoretical underpinning for the practical work. In the second year students apply and extend the skills learned in the first year through work on increasingly demanding material. Acting is applied in creating narrative performance, in working for radio and TV and through musical theatre workshop. Students take part in an intensive Shakespeare project and a public performance project. A range of electives and performances shared with other degree programmes at LIPA offer more opportunities for broadening performance experience. Students also take a Contextual Studies module. In the third year students apply and practice the skills developed over the first 2 years in a simulated professional environment, where they can gain experience in producing and directing as well as in a range of performances. Professional preparation is emphasised. This includes a full audition portfolio, business plan for their own arts company and a showcase presentation for agents in London and Liverpool.
